Building Space Scenes for Star Wars Posters

My latest trip to Disney world included a couple trips over to the Studios park which was alive with Star Wars activity in anticipation of their December 15 launch of the new movie.  So I attended a couple of different stage shows where the key characters were present and captured several good images of  Captain Phasma, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2D2, Boba Fett, and of course Darth Maul and Darth Vader and LOADS of great Stormtrooper images.

So what to do with all these great images…. well.. why not create my own custom posters themed with each character.  So that is my next project.

But before I could start, I also had to consider some of the environments that I wanted to build.  So I started working on space scenes.  I studied several space images from the Hubble space craft as well as just other artist sci-fi work.  I then began to build myself a custom brush collection for galaxy and outer space work.

I also had to build some planets and moons.  So I read a few tutorials and put together a file with a few planets in them.  I will probably add a few more that I can use and just modify the coloring with a hue/saturation layer in my actual composition.

I picked an image that I like and begin to practice.  Here is my second attempt to build a nebula from scratch.  No cloud render filters here.. all custom brushes. I’ve included my layer panels in the bottom of the article for both the space nebula and the planet/moon files.
