Wings Over Boerne

I’ve been away for a bit and have not been working on my blog or even editing images.  I still have three trips from 2015 to finish editing and posting and one so far from 2016.  But they say if you want something done, give it to a busy person… so what did I do.. I took on the job of building a new website for our corvette club.  So for the past 6 weeks or so I have been “heads down” working on another site, only this one is not a blog but a full website for the club, including a Facebook and Twitter site.

Not really photography you say…  well.. I did get to use several of my past images and Photoshop to build out some composite images for the banners.  There are 7 of them and whenever you move to a different page on the site, a new banner is displayed.  I got a little crazy with a couple of the red ones but it was fun!   Check it out at Texas Corvette Association.

But, this post isn’t about cars or website.  It’s about my first photo shoot back with my meetup group in quite some time.  I attended the “Wings Over Boerne” event Saturday at Boerne Convention and Visitor Bureau.  Here Master Falconer John Karger and his team fly or display owls, eagles, falcons and hawks.  Even a vulture dances across the lawn.  The birds are from Last Chance Forever,  a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned birds of prey.

I was a little rusty with the camera.  After taking hundreds of images I realized that several of my settings were wrong.  I forgot to turn on the stabilization setting on the lens when I took it off the tripod and I didn’t set the auto-focus from single point to a broader range to catch the motion.  I kept my depth of field too shallow so got some clear faces but not sharp birds…   ah.. the challenges of re-learning your tools when you have been away for a while!

But… not all was lost..  I took LOTS OF IMAGES!.. and was able to salvage a few dozen from the massive amounts of digital captures to create a few composites of the birds.  Here are my finals.  All images were captured on this day, selected out and placed on backgrounds that I built with Photoshop using several different layers of colors and textures.   Hope you like them.  The four categories are:  Owls, Eagle, Hawks, and the Falcon.
