Painting Highlights and Shadows – My Technique

I recently returned from a week at “Texas School” for Photography in Dallas Texas where about 1000 photographers assemble for a week long training.  This event happens once a year in April and includes training in photo capture, lighting, photography business, post processing and also digital painting.

I took a creative class on composition and painting and learned a new technique for painting images that is a bit different than my current style.  I take classes from other artist because it expands the “toolbox” and adds other creative ways to accomplish tasks in Photoshop.

As we all know, there are always several ways to accomplish anything in Photoshop.  So today, I made a quick 10 minute video to share one of my techniques for adding highlights and shadows to a painted work of art.  The Photoshop painting may be from scratch or with a mixer brush on a photo – it doesn’t matter.  But if you want to digitally enhance the work with final highlights and shadows, here is a really cool way to paint those details into your work WITHOUT SAMPLING ANY PAINT!

The video is ALSO hosted over on my YouTube channel as WordPress is not very good with rendering video.

So if this is slow, just click the link and jump over to my YouTube channel and watch it there.  It’s only 10 minutes but packed with tips and tricks…so have your pencil and note paper handy!       Soft Light Highlights and Shadows
