Cabo San Lucas

Cabo is a typical tourist port; not much around the harbor but restaurants, bars and vendors peddling tours, bartering for the next group of tourists that disembark from the tender boats.  The constant chatter of the tour offers being shoved in your face along with the typical Mexican souvenir shops makes the Cabo stop one that could definitely be crossed off my future list for a half day stop.  It might be a great vacation spot but you really have to get away from the harbor chaos.

So not really much to do and no place to go unless you take a tour out on the water to fish or snorkel, and after 7 or 8 days on the water that is not really the place I wanted to go.  So Celia and I walked around a bit but then I headed down along the harbor to get some pictures and she stay inside one of the shops to keep out of the sun and look for a few things for the grand kids.  Later we would meet up at a bar and have a drink before heading back to one of the tender boats and the short ride back out to our ship.

The harbor is beautiful and full of activity and energy.  Boats are constantly coming and going. The pelicans and sea lions are actively waiting for the next boat to come in with a catch and hoping to get the scraps from the cleaning.  I was able to watch a bit of a tussle for some scrapes between several birds and one little sea lion, but the sea lion generally got the “lion’s share.”

At the end of one walkway were some guys in costume who apparently performed an act on top of along pole.  I listened to their presentation for about 15 minutes but they never actually conducted a demonstration.  After several explanations of their performance, they packed up and left; never scaling the pole or demonstrating their art.  But their costumes are pretty!

On our trip back out to the Jewel of the Sea we passed a fishing boat that was tossing fish off the back of their boat.  We watch one of the harbor seals  jump completely out of the water onto their boat, collect the food and then slide back into the water, just inches from where they stood on the boat.  I had my long lens on and was able to capture the moment.  Image one of them below.

So it was good to get off the ship and get on dry land for a few hours.  But overall, sort of a wasted day.  As our port of call to Puerto Vallarta yesterday was cancelled due to civil unrest in the country, I was really looking forward to more of an adventure today.  But alas, it was not to be.  A short walk, a beer a the local bar and then back to the ship!
