Early Morning Hunt

We were provided a wake-up call at 5:00am and the jeeps pulled out of the parking area promptly at 5:30!  Not hardly time for a cup of coffee – which is probably ok as there are no facilities in the bush!!

This particular morning, as we headed out of the gate from the camp, our tracker spotted lion tracks INSIDE the fence where we stay.  So they knew the pride was close by.  It didn’t take him but about 10 minutes to find them.  They were all on an open field right next to where the reserve staff lived.

When we arrived, there was one lone sentry down by the ridge of the woods; very attentive to something in the distance.  It was a wildebeest.  It only took one glance to the grassland behind him to realize that all 20 eyes were focused on the same target!  We were right in the middle of their quest for breakfast!

It’s only 6:00am and the sun isn’t even up yet.. so it’s a bit difficult to get a decent capture of this scene.  But with an exposure pushed to extreme, here is the view we had from the jeep.

Needless to say, the wildebeest must have wandered off to a safe distance from the pride.  The sentry returned to the group and they all settled in for a leisurely morning of grooming, wrestling and just overall cat activity.  As the sun began to rise, I was able to get a few better images with settings not so extreme.  I have over 200 images from this morning (many bursts) and probably about 2 dozen worthy of processing.  I have a few complete and already in the gallery.  I have about a dozen from this spot yet to complete.    Here are just a few:
