Topaz Studio 2 – Impressions

I’ve had the Topaz Impressions software for quit sometime, both as a plug-in and then in Studio and now Studio 2.  I use it once in awhile in the beginning steps of my Photoshop painting process to de-pixelate the photograph and give me a nice base image to begin my mixer brush or  digital painting.  I’ve never really invested the time to find out how all the sliders work or the full extent of the software’s power and capabilities.

Well, yesterday I spent some time on YouTube watching some videos on the details of Impression and I learn loads about how to tweak the settings and pick the brushes to get just the look and feel that I want for an image.  I decide that I would try it on a landscape image first.

Here is a image of the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens just outside Charleston.

I captured this image a couple of years ago when I was there visiting some friends.  I liked the composition, but the image overall isn’t that inspiring.  I could take it into Lightroom or Photoshop and add some pop, but I decided to make this a digital painting instead.

Using Impressions and then taking it back into Photoshop for a few adjustment layers and lighting adjustments, here is the final digital painting

I like it much better as a painting!  I’m now on to explore some of the other filters in Studio and see what I can create!

So lets go paint!
