Co Rd 309 Kingsland

Thursday morning I headed out at 0630 to begin my travels around the Llano and Burnet areas. It’s a 90 minute drive for me to get up to this area, so by the time I reach the area, the sun is already up and I’m well into the golden hour.

But I didn’t head right to Burnet, I had to take some of the backroad to get there.  I went north on Hwy 281 until I reach Ranch Road 962 and took it west until it connected to Hwy 71. Nothing very eventful on this stretch… then…

West on 71 until I reach 2233 where I turned east (R) and then I turned north (L) on Ranch Road 2900 heading to Kingsland. Only one problem.. the bridge on RR 2900 was washed out, so RR 2900 didn’t go through to Kingsland. But, that didn’t deter me; I figured I would go as far as I could and then find some other roads out or just turn around.

I reached the blocked bridge; nothing significant so far. I decided to travel the small county road 309 west back out to hwy 71. WOW… what a find. Now this is a gravel road; it’s ranch country. It’s free roam livestock and yes, sometimes you just have to wait until Bessie decides to move off the road. But part of this area is absolutely beautiful and full of bluebonnets.

This year has been so good for blooms that one more roadside collection or even one more field covered with blooms just seems underwhelming. But this road provided something just a little bit different. Do you agree?
