Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe

After leaving Victoria Falls, we boarded a train, the Rovos Rail, and headed south to Pretoria South Africa.  We would spend three nights on the train and follow this route south.  We’ll..not exactly.. this is a car route from Google maps… we were on a train… but you get the general idea!

On the first day south, we stopped at the Hwange National Park for a game drive.  It was a good morning, quite cool – jacket or sweater weather and fortunately no rain.

We quickly came across the first large watering hole where there were plenty of zebra and wildebeest.

This seemed to be a great place for birding, as our driver stopped many times to point out various species along the trail.  Some were just too far away for a decent picture, even with a 400mm lens.

We were really hoping to see the cheetah, rhino, or leopard here, but any of these are very hard to find on just a 2 hour tour.

Fortunately for us (well some of the group) they found the cheetah in a tree.  By the time our vehicle reached the location, she had already jumped down and was heading into the deep brush.  I only got a quick shot of her side; no close up view and no face view.

Here are a few of the birds I did capture.  Two views of the Lilac-breasted Roller and one of the Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill that our driver referred to as the “flying banana”

And a few images of the zebra and wildebeest:
