Panama Canal Crossing

On the third day of our cruise we would reach the Panama Canal.  This was the event that we all anticipated; experiencing the crossing from one ocean to the other through the canals.  The real purpose of selecting this cruise.

Well… remember my mention of the disappointments of the trip.  Well for me, today was a big disappointment.  Not that it was raining and overcast and that photography would be a challenge, but I was restricted to my cabin!!  Yes. I was on medical isolation!

Why you ask?  Seems the night before I decided to try the spicy Thai vegetables as part of my dinner.  My system obviously didn’t agree that I should have tried that dish.  As such I spent the previous evening from about midnight until 2 am in medical getting IV fluids and medication to control the vomiting and well… you guessed it…  a full GI upset.   With all the recent publicity on ship viruses and outbreaks, one of the ship’s authorities (not the doctor) decided that I must be on 24 hours of isolation.  Now note, I had been on this ship for three full days, so really no opportunity for exposure to anything.

Which meant that I got to only witness the Panama crossing from my 7th floor balcony. Fortunately we had a room on the side of the ship that faced the majority of the action.  So if some of the image are taken at a peculiar angle, well, consider it creative perspective!  As well as “isolation imposed limitations” on where I could stand to get a shot.  All in all, it wasn’t horrible, but certainly disappointing given that the crossing was the reason for booking the cruise.

As the day was rainy and the sky was overcast and dreary, I decided to render my favorites in monotone versus color.  Hope you like them.   The color images are included in a small gallery at the bottom for comparison.

And a small gallery of the colored images of the same shots
