I glanced at the weather app on Tuesday and realized that it was the last day on the 10 day forecast where the weather was warm enough for a nice photo day outside. So I grabbed the camera and headed the hour drive to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch outside San Antonio for a few tour through the ranch.
I had to hand hold for these captures; I’m generally standing on my seat and have my sunroof open in the car and I’m leaning out over the top of the roof. I take a bean bag with me for a little bit of stability for the long lens, but with the animals moving all round you, it’s often not too helpful unless capturing a long distance shot of them lying down. Most of the time I was using my 100-400 lens, but I also keep the 24-70 on another body on the seat for those curious ones that visit right at the window and 100mm is just too close.
The morning was perfect weather, cloudy and overcast so no harsh shadows. By the afternoon, the sun was out and the images were not that great, but I continued until I finished my tour of their 450 acre drive. Arriving at about 11am, I finished about 2:30pm.
I tried to focus on closeup portraits today, as I have many full body images from previous visits. Here is a collection of some of my captures from the day.
