The Offering

Today, a composite instead of a painting.  I posted this on Instagram yesterday, but I didn’t like the ground under the squirrels so I put a dirt overlay pattern on it in softlight and transformed the perspective.  I like it much better than the one yesterday.  I also fixed the shadow under the leg of the rhino which wasn’t cast the same distance from his body as the rest of the shadow.

A squirrel offering the rhino his lettuce while another squirrel watches.

I’ve been painting more than compositing lately, so it’s hard to get back in the swing of compositing.  Mainly to get ideas for composites.  They are much more difficult than painting and take 3-4 times the amount of effort in hours if you have many elements on your canvas that need to be color balanced and properly lit for the scene; especially if your element started with the light direction opposite of your composite light source.

But… that is what compositing is all about.  Putting the pieces together and making them look like they all belong there.

Here are the images I used for this composite.  The rhino and trees are mine.  The squirrels are stock.  The rocks are also my images from a trip last year.  I never miss an opportunity to capture great rocks when I have the chance.  I always want my rocks to come from the same area so they have similar composition and texture.  These were from Dogwood Canyon Nature Park in Lampe, Missouri near the Arkansas/Missouri border.  Definitely worth a stop if you are ever passing by the area.
