New Mixer Technique

Trying a new painting technique after watching Richard Sturdevant’s Wildlife Painting class. I built my own brush through, as nothing in his library or mine was going to give me the results I needed… but.. that’s ok… I’ve built hundreds of custom brushes… now I have a great feather brush. This one started out a grass brush I think! It has color dynamics on it, so you can set both the foreground and background. With each stroke you get a nice blend of those two colors. You can then keep changing one of them to get your highlights and shadows or alternate color areas. Really easy to keep switching.

I have an under painting on this as I’m working.. I find it best to always have an under-paint to catch any of the small areas between strokes when you don’t cover the image with 100% with feathers or fur.

This time I used a new technique for under painting too. I took the cutout of the bird, ran it through the cutout filter with 8, 4, 1 as the settings, then the oil paint filter at 5.0 and 5.0 and finally a 3 px blur. I removed all the little edge feathers from the under-paint layer so they don’t mess with my edges as I pull out the final feathers. Very easy. Probably going to build an action for the under painting as I use one on almost every painting I do. Should save some time.

Hope you enjoyed it.  Now let’s go paint!
