Print Competition and My Self-Critique Check List

I was cleaning up my desk today and ran across a check list that I compiled to help me remember all the things I want to check on my final composites and paintings for print competition.  It’s certainly not a final, just a list of my current thoughts that I add to as I think of something  (or get feedback from a juror on one of my images).

I know that many of my fellow photographers are also on their journey towards their “Master Artist” degree with the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), so I thought I would make my check list available to anyone that wants to download it.

You can download the pdf file here.   Download Print Comp Critique Tips

When you see the list, you will notice on my list that I discuss the use of various “CHECK LAYERS” in my work.  I’ve also looked up the YouTube videos for the training that I used when I learned to use check layers.  The first one contains a link to download an action that contains 4 different check layers, Solarize, Hue, Luminosity and Saturation.  I only use the Luminosity and Saturation from this set, but the video gives you a very good tutorial on how these work.

HERE IS THE LINK TO DOWNLOAD THEIR ACTION SET

The other CHECK LAYER that I use for color balancing is my Ambient Light Check Layer.  I learned it from this video tutorial.  If you don’t want to watch the entire 7 tips, the segment on Ambient Light Check Layer is at the 05:36 – segment 3 on the video.

The second video does not provide an action, but I’ve turned the steps into an action and added a color balance adjustment instead of a selective color adjustment.  I think the color balance adjustment is much easier to use when matching colors as you get to adjust highlights, mid-tones and shadows separately.

I did a blog on this process and there is a download button in that blog article where you can grab my action file if you want to try it.    AMBIENT LIGHT COLOR BALANCING

Hope you find the self-critique helpful.  If you want to add some additional comments to the list I can update it and repost it to my blog for others to enjoy.
